Greek Folk Dancing in Sifnos – Learn the Steps, Feel the Tradition

No experience needed. We learn, talk and dance together in a fun and active way.

In this Greek folk dancing experience in Sifnos, guests learn from one to four different Greek folk dances. We keep it simple and enjoyable, so that you can really dance and not only watch.

While we rehearse the steps, we talk about folk dancing in Greece and the way this living tradition follows Greeks wherever they are in the world. We also focus on dances that can easily be repeated at home, at a wedding, at a village festival or at any gathering where Greek music appears again in your life.

What we learn & how the lesson works

We start with simple circle dances and build from there. Depending on the group and the time we have together, we can learn between one and four different Greek folk dances.

We break the steps into small pieces, repeat them many times and put them together with music once they feel comfortable. There is space for questions, for laughter and for small breaks, but overall it is an active session where you will be moving most of the time.

The goal is that you leave with at least one dance that you can join confidently anywhere in the world where there are Greeks, Greek music and a bit of free space to dance.

Who can join & where we dance

You do not need any previous experience in dancing. The lesson is open to:

  • Complete beginners who have never tried Greek dancing before
  • Guests of any age over 6 years old
  • People of different physical conditions, from “I never exercise” to “I dance every week”

The place of the lesson is flexible. We can dance in:

  • A yard or courtyard
  • An outdoor hotel area
  • A quiet part of a beach
  • A hotel room or indoor space, if there is enough room to move safely

The exact location depends on the number of participants, the time of day and what is available in your accommodation or nearby. We decide together when we confirm your booking.

Duration, group size & practical details

The Greek folk dancing lesson lasts about 90 minutes. This gives us enough time to:

  • Warm up gently and get used to the music
  • Learn and practice the basic steps
  • Repeat the dances several times so they stay in your body

The experience works well for very small and very large groups:

  • Minimum: 2 participants
  • Maximum: more than 50 people (ideal for events, retreats, celebrations or large families)

Comfortable clothes and shoes that stay on your feet (no slippery soles) are important. You do not need special dance shoes, just something stable. A bottle of water nearby is also a good idea.

  • Do I need any previous experience to join the Greek folk dancing lesson?

No. The lesson is designed for complete beginners as well as for people who may have tried Greek dancing once or twice before. I explain the steps slowly, we repeat them together and we build up to dancing with music at a comfortable pace. You do not need to know anything in advance.

  • How many dances will we learn?

Depending on the group and how quickly everyone feels comfortable, we usually learn from one to four different Greek folk dances. We start with simple circle dances and add more as we go, always making sure that you can follow and enjoy the music while you dance.

  • Where does the dancing lesson take place?

The location is flexible. We can dance in a yard, an outdoor hotel area, a quiet part of a beach or an indoor room with enough space to move safely. When you contact me, please tell me where you are staying and how many you are, so we can choose the best spot together.

  • Is the lesson suitable for children and older guests?

Yes, the lesson is suitable for guests of almost all ages, as long as they are older than 6 and can follow simple instructions. For older guests or people who prefer a gentler pace, we can keep the movements softer and focus on simpler steps, making sure that everyone feels included and safe.

  • How long does the Greek folk dancing lesson last?

The lesson lasts about 90 minutes. This includes a short warm-up, time to learn and repeat the steps, and several full dances with music. It is long enough to really feel the rhythm and to remember at least one or two dances when you go back home.

  • How many people can join the dancing lesson?

The minimum is 2 people and the maximum can be more than 50. The atmosphere is different with a couple, a family or a very large group, but the structure is similar. For big groups we may divide into smaller circles or rows so that everybody can see and follow the steps.

  • What should I wear for the Greek folk dancing experience?

Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely and shoes that stay firmly on your feet. Trainers or flat sandals with secure straps are perfect. Avoid very slippery soles or shoes that can easily slip off while you dance. Bringing some water is also a good idea, especially on warm days or evenings.

  • How can I book the Greek folk dancing lesson in Sifnos?

To book, please send me a request through the contact page with your preferred date, the number of people in your group, the ages (especially if you have children) and where you are staying.
